Ray, owner of this Pyes Pa home, noticed the old entrance to his property had become overgrown with huge plants and palm trees which were dominating the house and decided to give Zones Landscaping a call. “I chose Zones because they were a recognisable brand and I had seen their trucks around,” says Ray. Tauranga landscaping specialist Nigel Ramsden came on board to help with the project and sat down with Ray to figure out exactly what it was he wanted.

The brief was for Nigel to replant the entire area, replace the old sleepers, and repair the entrance steps. “We presented the quote to Ray the day before our city went into lockdown for COVID,” reveals Nigel. “It was the first job we completed when everything settled back down.”

Using the Zones process, Nigel carefully planned the project and ensured that the large palm trees could be transplanted to other areas of the property. Every change was agreed upon during the design stage and the initial quote came in at $16,000, and the project was completed on-time and within budget.

Nigel kept this project to his own team and decided not to bring in any tradespeople or contractors, as his team possessed all the expertise to get the job done. There was no council consent required either, although Nigel is used to dealing with this on behalf of his clients.

New planting

“One interesting aspect is that we were able to reuse some of the specimen palms in the other areas of the property, which actually worked really well,” explains Nigel. “The four pygmy palms were moved from the entrance and placed down to the side of the driveway, which looked really awesome!”

“It certainly was a challenge to move the palms and ensure they stayed healthy during the process,” says Nigel, “but it was all worth it in the end.”

Nigel used recycled railway sleepers and worked with preferred partner Mitre10 for the supplies used in this project.

Beside the main lawn area, Nigel planted a selection of plants, including Philodendron Xaxandu, Succulents, Rhododendron Vireya, Zephyranthes Candida, and Lomandra Little Con, while the area next to the driveway now includes Lomandra Little Con, Camellia Quintessence, Rhododendron Vireya, Lomandra Little Con, Philodendron Xanadu, Clivia Miniata, Sedum Gold Mound, Zephyranthes Candida, Cycas Revoluta, and Philodendron Xanadu.

The new landscape design

When asked about his thoughts on the final result, Nigel says: “It turned out great. Everything looks just like the initial design. The railway sleepers especially look awesome. The clients were really fun to work with too!”

“I’m very pleased with the end result,” says homeowner Ray. “The place was left tidy and everyone who has come through since then has been very impressed. Nigel was pleasant and knowledgeable, I’d recommend him and his team to anyone who needs their landscape improved.”
