Interested in redesigning their patio to better suit their home and garden, the homeowners of this luxury Tauranga property contacted Zones Landscaping Specialist Nigel Ramsden to discuss their project. After hearing their ideas, Nigel presented them with a design which included garden landscaping and a new patio featuring recycled railway sleepers.

“The client was delighted with the design so we went to work on removing the existing concrete and installing the sleepers"

Unique hardscaping

“The client was delighted with the design so we went to work on removing the existing concrete and installing the sleepers”, tells Nigel. “The railway lines got ripped out in the recent Kaikoura earthquake, so we recycled the railway sleepers. The sleepers were laid in the exposed aggregate concrete and used in a Manhattan-style around the edge.  They make great features and matched the sleepers already within the existing garden. Using them within the concrete and around the patio gave the area a real point of difference.”

From there, Nigel and his team got to work on the garden, adding in outdoor lighting and making the most of the on-site resources.

Outdoor lighting

“Lighting around the garden makes it very special at night time. We also moved some huge rocks from other areas of the garden to feature around the area.

The final result

Nigel took care of the process from beginning to end, ensuring his clients didn’t need to worry about managing tradespeople or schedules. As their one point of contact, Nigel was the only person his clients needed to maintain contact with, and he frequently updated them on the project and its progress. He was able to present them with a completed landscape design that met the originally promised budget and timeline - $20,000 worth of work completed within two weeks.

“Nigel was excellent to work with"
- Philippa, Zones client

The (approx.) 75m2 area now boasts an aesthetic patio with railway sleepers leading the way to a shaded table and chairs. Enveloped within trees and plants, the patio provides a relaxing social hideaway.

“The completed project looks really good”, shares Nigel. “The reclaimed railway sleepers are a favourite! The previous concrete was quite plain and the landscaping work we did really brought the area in line with its surroundings.”

“Nigel was excellent to work with”, says homeowner Philippa. “We changed a few things as we went along but nothing was too much trouble - I’d recommend him to anybody. We love the new patio, everyone who sees it loves it!”
