A paving, decking, louvre roof and planting project in Campbells Bay.
Landscaping specialists Glen and Tracey Barker were asked to upgrade this worn-out backyard in Campbells Bay. When the pair first visited the site, they were met with rusting gate hinges, a lawn that wasn’t practical to their client’s lifestyle and a deck that was in need of an update.
“The clients wanted to make their backyard more user-friendly all-year-round by replacing the grass with paving, replacing the decking with garapa hardwood and by creating a covered area for entertaining”, tells Tracey. “They were also interested in new planting, a new gate, a stone-look retaining wall and outdoor lighting. For the front and side of the house, they wanted to create some privacy with new planting and tidy up some existing gardens.”
Tracey put together a cost estimate, based on her customer’s ideas. Once the project was approved, the Zones team got to work.

The original timber gate was replaced with a sturdy aluminium model, supplied by Pacific Outdoor Solutions; who also supplied the Eclipse Louvre System - offering the homeowners the option of full coverage or filtered sunshine. Both the gate and louvre system were powder coated in a Grey Friars colour.
No outdoor room is complete without good-quality flooring, so Tracey and the team built a 140mm garapa deck with stainless steel fixings - the hardwood being a durable and aesthetic choice.
For the pavers, Forum and Piazza styles were installed to the clients’ specifications.
“The clients wanted a pattern with the pavers which proved to be very tricky”, says Tracey. “We ended up planning on grid paper to get the correct amount of pavers. It took a lot of extra time when laying them - but it was worth it.”
One of the most important improvements, and possibly the most striking, is the stone veneer retaining wall along the edge of the property.
“We used a stone veneer to cover the existing retaining wall”, explains Tracey. “It looks great! It was Stutex stone veneer using the Cerastone range - Florida Classico.”

Achieving the desired result with a detailed project such as this is quite a procedure. In this case, the weather inevitably extended the process - industrial heaters had to be used to keep things on track.
“We had to wait about three weeks for the gibbed retaining wall to dry before we could put the stone veneer on, as it was the middle of winter and kept raining. We ended up having to use industrial heaters”, confirms Tracey.
While the retaining wall took up a large part of the project timeline, Tracey says it turned out great.
“It was the first time we had used the stone veneer - we are really pleased with it.”
To enhance the revamped outdoor space, Tracey’s team worked on a new planting plan. This included Ficus Tuffy trees along the property’s fence line. Stretches of Grisselinia trees were also planted, along with Zepheranthes, Moon Glow and Fire Glow Clivia flowers, and Little Gem Magnolias.
The space has come along way from its rustic origins. Clean lines and quality materials create a spacious appeal as well as a practical yet grand atmosphere.
“We really like the whole project”, says Tracey of the update. “I think it came together nicely with the decking, paving, louvres, etc.”
Recalling the complex paving installation, Tracey concludes:
“I do think the pattern done with the pavers looks great!”
