ARTICLE Mayjer MicroGreens
Rooftop and balcony gardening is on the rise as city dwellers looks for ways to grow their own food in the often limited space they have available. But what if you’d like to extend your growing season throughout the year?
Enter MayJer MicroGreens, a Wanaka-based company that was started in those exact circumstances. “We were living in a tiny apartment with no garden of our own,” says Maya Novak Sever, who owns the company with her husband Jerry. “Winter was just starting and we really wanted a fresh supply of greens – and that’s how everything began.”
Maya and Jerry discovered microgreens, tiny young plants that take just 1-3 weeks to grow and are a nutritional powerhouse. They now supply fresh ones to local chefs, but one of their bestsellers remain their home growing kits, which enable anyone with a foot or two of extra space on their kitchen bench or window sill to grow their own microgreens. With three sizes and seven different sorts (red cabbage, kale, rocket and radish, to name a few), growing your own food anywhere and any time just got a lot easier.
Starting from just $12 for a growing kit – what have you got to lose?
