Zone's People's Choice Awards: 2021 Decking and Paving of the Year

Zone\u2019s People\u2019s Choice Awards: 2021 Decking and Paving of the Year\n

Decking and paving are quite literally the foundation of a great outdoor space. And what better place to find inspiration for your project than from the winners of our 2021 People’s Choice Awards? Take a look at this year’s top picks in the Decking and Paving category.

BRONZE WINNER: A Family-Friendly Backyard in Northcote Point, Auckland by Kate Ryan

Ground-level decking and a perfectly levelled lawn were key to the success of this landscaping project. The new, spacious deck has allowed the backyard to host multiple entertaining spaces, including a barbecue, dining, and lounge space, and even wraps further around the home, leading to a hidden spa pool. A custom-built pergola further enhances the comfortable outdoor living area that’s been created. And with the lawn flattened out, the backyard has become all the more usable, becoming home to a trampoline.

SILVER WINNER: A Modern Inner City Courtyard in Ponsonby by Kate Ryan

Multi-level decking maximises the use of space in this urban courtyard with defined, purposeful areas. On the ground level, the main deck offers an ideal area for entertaining, surrounded by privacy hedges, a louvre overhead, and lighting for an inviting ambience. All the while, the above tiers are perfectly suited for potted veggie gardens, bench seating, or even a barbecue. Ultimately, the decking takes full advantage of all outdoor space available on this inner-city property.

GOLD WINNER: Japanese inspired garden in Morningside Whangarei by Jason Clarke

A staggered garden was instrumental in this landscape’s transformation from an underutilised courtyard to a Japanese inspired sanctuary. At the ground level, garapa decking and porcelain tiling provide a spacious area to relax and entertain. Meanwhile, the surrounding garden creates a tranquil and intimate atmosphere, established with schist stone retaining walls, softscaping, and two large trees; one cherry blossom, the other maple. And tying everything together, large slate pavers on stone paths mimic those of traditional Japanese stepping stones, leading up to the landscape’s highest level where raised garden beds have been tucked away.
