After working with local Landscape Designer James Maclean from JD Landscapes, the owners of this Matapouri holiday home were referred to their local Zones Landscaping Specialist: Jason Clarke. Their design and planting plan involved removing their existing overgrown gardens, replacing their fence, installing paving and a pathway. As the owners didn’t live on-site, Zones’ project management and communication systems provided an ideal solution.

“Jason and Anisa Clark of Zones Matapouri helped us to recreate our garden at our bach, which had become very overgrown”, tells Kirsten, the homeowner. “Both Jason and Anisa were fantastic. Our family lead very busy lives, and we needed landscapers who could take control of the project but also listen to us and what we wanted to create with our garden. Jason and Anisa did both.”

Hardscaping

Jason scheduled in his team to carry out the landscaping work and kept in touch with Kirsten and her family with regular phone calls and photo updates of the new planting, Firth paving (sourced from Mitre 10) and lime chip pathway installation.

“They are incredibly hard-working, knowledgeable, reliable and just lovely people”, adds Kirsten. “They listened to us and spent a lot of time, both in-person and over the phone, talking to us about what we wanted to create and the plants we wanted in our garden. They did a great job landscaping and putting in the plants.  Best of all, they kept the plants alive and thriving in very difficult conditions; with sandy soil, drought and rabbits (eventually building a rabbit fence to protect our hibiscus!).”

Once the initial work was complete, Jason met with the holiday homeowners on-site to present them with their property updates. During this meeting, Kirsten discussed the possibility of further landscaping work with Jason. She was interested in additional planting work as well as adding a few feature trees to their property. Jason happily obliged, adding another 12 weeks to the project duration to carry out the required work.

Softscaping

“I wanted plants that flowered profusely, particularly over the summer”, explains Kirsten. “My favourite element is a planting of red hibiscus, which will be gorgeous as it grows and is already giving us a lot of pleasure.  I am also loving my planting of Michelia and Mexican orange blossom which are flowering beautifully. These were plants that we chose, in consultation with Jason and Anisa, that appealed to us. They allowed us to give a personal touch to our garden.”

As the new specimen trees were planted late in the season, they required a little extra TLC. Jason’s team installed irrigation systems and monitored the garden regularly until Kirsten and her family were able to visit at Christmas time.

The new landscape design

Now complete, the updated landscape features a private backyard with tidy paving and an attractive garden. Upon arrival, the property-front boasts a thriving garden and, to the side of the house, the lime chip pathway connects the front and backyard areas. The property update adds to the relaxing surroundings of the holiday home and is maintained on an ongoing basis by the Zones Landscaping Whangarei team.

“Jason and Anisa have also done a great job in trimming and reviving our hedges, replanting our lawn and fixing our watering system”, says Kirsten. “They have been very meticulous in everything they have done. The plants have been really well planted so that they are well spaced and look great. We would highly recommend Jason and Anisa. They have been just fantastic and we have really enjoyed working with them on the project. They are now helping to regularly maintain the garden, which is also great and working well.”
