Outdoor Vision

There’s nothing Kiwis love more than a beautiful deck to extend their living space and offer options for outdoor entertaining. Often the space a deck needs is underutilised anyway, and a well-built deck adds a stylish finishing touch to your home.

Morteza’s Stanmore Bay property in sunny Whangaparāoa did have a small existing deck, but he had a vision to make big changes. He got in touch with her local Zones Consultant Sandy Lochhead for some expert advice, to see what was possible, and understand more about the Zones experience.

Sandy explained to Morteza that Zones offer customised solutions that are tailored to each homeowner’s individual needs and budget, all while providing a complete end-to-end building experience that eliminates all the usual stress and worry associated with home landscaping. Sandy could provide a complete plan and budget to approve before any work began, plus expertly project manage the build. This tailored customer service was exactly what Morteza needed, so the pair began planning a stunning deck makeover.

Expert Consultation and Concept

Morteza’s property had an existing deck at the rear of the property, but he wanted to explore options for extending this and joining it to a new deck build at the front of the home. He really wanted increased outdoor living space which the decking would provide, and because the area to be used was on a slope and not utilised anyway, it was definitely a good solution that would also look much more appealing.

Sandy worked with her designer and builder to come up with a concept that would include a new deck build that would wrap around the side of the home and connect with the existing deck. To achieve a seamless look, she suggested that the original pine decking boards be removed and replaced with Kwila decking to match the new build. Morteza loved the idea so he signed off the design, timeline, and budget so that the exciting work could begin.

Excavation and Transformation

Sandy tapped into her existing network of trusted professionals to create the right team to tackle Morteza’s decking project. While Sandy scheduled and managed the workflow, Morteza could sit back, relax, and watch the project unfold completely stress-free. At the rear of the property, excavation was underway to create the necessary clearance for the back deck and the old pine boards were removed, while at the front of the home, the new deck space was coming to life complete with a timber balustrade and an infill of horizontal decking boards on the underside of the deck that faced the road.

Even though her deck did not require council consent, Morteza was relieved to have Sandy’s expertise on hand to answer any questions and ensure everything was compliant. Zones Consultants are completely up to date with all council requirements and manage the consent process for you, or, can work with you to find clever solutions to avoid the need for consent in the first place by reducing the height of your deck, for example.

A Seamless Result

In just three short weeks, Sandy and her team created a stylish and seamless deck for Morteza that delivered the outdoor living space he wanted. The deck now wraps around most of the home, offering plenty of space, multiple places to relax and entertain, and a finishing touch to the property.

Morteza opted for Kwila decking, a popular hardwood known for its durability and natural resistance to rot and insects. Its rich reddish-brown hue brings warmth and vibrancy to the outdoors, and beautifully complements the home’s neutral linear weatherboard look and dark toned fencing. Adding horizontal boards to the underside of the deck as infill also created a beautiful finishing which looks fabulous from the driveway and roadside.

Sandy loves the result.

“The new deck provides a seamless connection around the house and loads of extra space. The property was a relatively new build, but the deck has really provided the finishing touch and was a stylish and practical addition. Upgrading to Kwila decking was not only a fantastic choice aesthetically but is a great long-term investment – there’s a reason it’s so popular! We are thrilled with the outcome and loved working with Morteza to achieve her outdoor vision.”
