Project Overview

The villa in Hamilton sat on a spacious lifestyle block, but the outdoor area wasn’t being used to its full potential. The homeowner wanted an ample and comfortable space where family and friends could gather in the summer. Their dream was to extend the existing deck, build a covered entertainment area, and add a clear path from the back door to the deck.

The Zones Landscaping team was tasked with taking the project from planning to installation, providing ideas, designs, and a comprehensive build.

Budget & Timeline

The client did not share a budget at the start. After discussing options and expectations, the Zones team provided a quote based on premium materials. When the client explained their actual budget and what they wanted, the team adjusted the plan.

Final Costs

  • Total cost: $85,000
  • No changes were added after confirming the materials.

Project Duration

  • Installation time: 2 weeks
  • The goal was to have everything finished before Christmas.
  • The team completed the project in time for the client to enjoy the summer season.

Design & Planning

The Zones team provided both design and build services, helping the homeowner understand the best layout and material options.

The home has a classic villa look, so the client’s biggest wish was that the new pergola should blend in and not look like an add-on. To achieve this, the team focused on matching the villa’s existing gable roof style.

Key Design Choices

  • Kwila timber for a warm, natural deck surface
  • A gabled roof pergola to match the home’s original roof
  • ClearView (polycarbonate) roofing to let sunlight through
  • A concrete path and mowing strips for easy movement and garden care

A council consent was technically marked “yes,” but no specific part of the project required consent based on the information provided.

Project Execution

The Zones Landscaping team managed the complete build and coordinated all trades.

Tasks Completed

  • A large Kwila deck with steps
  • Concrete path installation
  • Concrete mowing strips
  • A gabled roof pergola, connected directly to the house
  • Project management from start to finish

Trades Involved

  • Builder
  • Concreter

With a large block of land and an 80m²+ deck area, the project's scale was significant. The team planned the work carefully, ensuring that everything stayed within the client’s expectations and timeline.

Challenges Overcome

Matching the New Roof to the Villa

The homeowner wanted the pergola roof to blend seamlessly with the house. It meant:

  • The roof shape had to match the villa’s gable
  • The connection point needed to look clean and seamless
  • Materials had to suit the traditional style of the home

The team achieved this, and the final pergola blends beautifully with the original structure.

Managing Costs for a Large Outdoor Area

The client was worried the project might be too expensive because:

  • The deck was huge
  • Extra work, like the concrete path and mowing strip, adds more labour
  • A custom-made pergola can increase costs.

However, by adjusting materials, from a louvre roof to a polycarbonate ClearView roof and using Kwila decking instead of composite, the project stayed at the client’s final budget of $85k.

Final Result

The finished outdoor area is spacious, welcoming, and perfect for family gatherings. The new gable-roof pergola appears to have always been a part of the house, which was one of the client’s primary goals.

  • The gabled roof seamlessly integrates with the original roof, making it feel like an integral part of the villa’s original design.
  • The Kwila deck offers a warm, natural appearance with ample space for summer entertainment.
  • The ClearView polycarbonate roof protects from the weather while still allowing light to pass through.
  • The concrete path provides a clean and easy route from the back door to the entertainment space.

Customer Background & Experience

Why They Wanted to Renovate

  • To create an outdoor entertainment space for summer
  • To add a covered area for family gatherings
  • To include a concrete path for better access

Initial Concerns

  • The area was large, so the client feared costs would be too high
  • They did not want the pergola to look like an afterthought
  • They wanted the project completed before Christmas

These concerns were fully addressed through design adjustments and clear communication.

Products & Suppliers

Preferred Partners Used

  • Robertson Custom Glaze 600 Polycarbonate Roof – purchased through Louvre Roof Specialists
  • Additional supplies from Bunnings and Pacemakers

No innovative products or special solutions were used.

Outcome

The outdoor renovation is an excellent example of how innovative design, careful material selection, and skilled building can transform a lifestyle block into a warm and inviting entertainment area. The client now has a beautiful deck and pergola that feel like part of the original home, ready to be enjoyed for many summers ahead.

Post-Completion Reflection

A year after completion, it has been great to see how the family is using and enjoying the space. The Kwila deck has become a natural gathering spot for weekend BBQs and family time, while the soffit-mounted pergola with blinds provides comfort and shelter throughout the year. The concrete mowing strips have also made garden maintenance easier, keeping the outdoor area neat and practical. Revisiting the project showed how the space has become part of the family’s everyday life, not just a finished landscape but a well-used outdoor living area.
