A well-planned deck and pergola project that blends perfectly with the villa and delivers a functional outdoor space for everyday use.
The villa in Hamilton sat on a spacious lifestyle block, but the outdoor area wasn’t being used to its full potential. The homeowner wanted an ample and comfortable space where family and friends could gather in the summer. Their dream was to extend the existing deck, build a covered entertainment area, and add a clear path from the back door to the deck.
The Zones Landscaping team was tasked with taking the project from planning to installation, providing ideas, designs, and a comprehensive build.
The client did not share a budget at the start. After discussing options and expectations, the Zones team provided a quote based on premium materials. When the client explained their actual budget and what they wanted, the team adjusted the plan.
The Zones team provided both design and build services, helping the homeowner understand the best layout and material options.
The home has a classic villa look, so the client’s biggest wish was that the new pergola should blend in and not look like an add-on. To achieve this, the team focused on matching the villa’s existing gable roof style.
A council consent was technically marked “yes,” but no specific part of the project required consent based on the information provided.
The Zones Landscaping team managed the complete build and coordinated all trades.
With a large block of land and an 80m²+ deck area, the project's scale was significant. The team planned the work carefully, ensuring that everything stayed within the client’s expectations and timeline.
The homeowner wanted the pergola roof to blend seamlessly with the house. It meant:
The team achieved this, and the final pergola blends beautifully with the original structure.
The client was worried the project might be too expensive because:
However, by adjusting materials, from a louvre roof to a polycarbonate ClearView roof and using Kwila decking instead of composite, the project stayed at the client’s final budget of $85k.
The finished outdoor area is spacious, welcoming, and perfect for family gatherings. The new gable-roof pergola appears to have always been a part of the house, which was one of the client’s primary goals.
These concerns were fully addressed through design adjustments and clear communication.
No innovative products or special solutions were used.
The outdoor renovation is an excellent example of how innovative design, careful material selection, and skilled building can transform a lifestyle block into a warm and inviting entertainment area. The client now has a beautiful deck and pergola that feel like part of the original home, ready to be enjoyed for many summers ahead.
A year after completion, it has been great to see how the family is using and enjoying the space. The Kwila deck has become a natural gathering spot for weekend BBQs and family time, while the soffit-mounted pergola with blinds provides comfort and shelter throughout the year. The concrete mowing strips have also made garden maintenance easier, keeping the outdoor area neat and practical. Revisiting the project showed how the space has become part of the family’s everyday life, not just a finished landscape but a well-used outdoor living area.
