The project delivered a stylish, functional backyard perfect for relaxation and entertaining year-round.
The owners of this Mt Eden home had a sloped, rocky garden that was hard to use. They wanted a space where they could relax, entertain friends, and enjoy the outdoors all year round.
Their dream included a hot tub, a shaded area for comfort, good lighting for evenings, and tropical plants for colour. They also wanted privacy from neighbours and a design that would work well with the shape of their backyard.
The Zones Landscaping team led Landscaping Consultant Kate Ryan by was tasked with overseeing the entire project, including design, planning, project management, and construction.
The team began with a detailed 3D design. The plan included:
The pergola was custom-made, so the team built the timeline to include manufacturing lead time. Privacy screens and a custom hardwood bar leaner were also included to make the space functional and stylish.
A beautiful Kwila hardwood deck was built, matching the home’s existing timber. The slope of the land meant the deck had to be carefully designed so it connected neatly to the ground and flowed into the hot tub area. The pergola, made from SolarSmart polycarbonate roofing, reduces UV rays while still letting in natural light.
The owners arranged the cedar hot tub, and Kate’s team organised the electrical work. Slatted aluminium screens were placed around the spa for privacy without blocking airflow.
The old fence was replaced with a black solid-panel aluminium fence. This gave the garden a modern look and better privacy. A custom wood shed was built at the side of the house to keep storage tidy.
The team designed and built a custom outdoor bar leaner for the BBQ area, giving guests a perfect spot to relax and chat.
Garden lights and step lights made the space feel warm and inviting at night. Tropical plants were added to bring a holiday-like feel and vibrant colours to the garden.
The biggest challenge was the sloped lawn and the unexpected rock where the deck was planned. The team lowered the deck level to connect better with the ground and designed steps leading into the spa area.
The pergola also needed adjustment after being put up because the slope made its angle too steep. The team worked closely with the owners to get the right height and look.
Another small challenge was a change in aluminium colour during the project. The team checked the new shade with the owners before continuing so that the final result matched the design perfectly.
The owners wanted a smooth, well-managed project, and that’s what they received. Kate and her Zones Landscaping team handled all trades and suppliers, so the owners didn’t need to worry about coordination.
Even when challenges appeared, the team had solutions ready and kept the owners updated at every stage. It gave the owners confidence that the project was on track.
The backyard is now a private retreat perfect for both relaxing and entertaining. The deck links the house to the garden, the spa offers year-round comfort, and the pergola adds shelter and style.
At night, the garden lighting makes the space feel magical, and the tropical plants add beauty during the day. The modern fencing keeps the area private, while the bar leaner and custom made woodbox storage solution make it functional.
This transformation shows how an innovative design and quality build can turn a blank area not used into a beautiful, practical space. The owners now have an outdoor area they can enjoy every season, whether it’s soaking in the hot tub on a cool evening or hosting a summer BBQ.
