Exploring Options

Wanting to make the most of their home’s stunning view overlooking Khandallah Park, Helen and Frank sought help from Zones to design and build a deck and pergola that would connect to an existing sunroom for seamless indoor/outdoor flow.

As previous Refresh Renovations customers, they understood the similar approach that Zones Landscaping could provide. The couple had found the five-step process stress-free and intuitive, and they were eager to implement that strategy for their landscaping goals. They reached out to local Landscaping Consultant Lia Boersma to discuss their ideas and explore the possibilities within their budget.

Consulting the Experts

Helen and Frank’s original budget was $150,000 for the refreshed sunroom, new patio, and pergola. Drawing on her years of experience in the construction industry and a detailed understanding of her clients’ priorities, Lia made the hard call. The changes could not be made within that budget. Helen and Frank could still accomplish their dream indoor to outdoor living area but it would take $20,000 more. Appreciative of Lia’s sound advice, they agreed to the increase.

Lia then consulted an architect to mock up detailed designs for Helen and Frank to review, an exciting time as all details were meticulously checked and the choice of materials confirmed.

After obtaining the required council building consent, Lia got to work to secure the materials and contractors for the project. Unfortunately, there were some COVID-related supply delays, but Lia kept Helen and Frank in the loop and continued to update the timeline completion.

Breaking Ground

Because this project included both indoor and outdoor elements, multiple tradespeople were needed. For the outdoor patio and pergola specifically, builders, tilers, and painters followed once the necessary excavation work was complete, and the concrete slabs poured. Lia kept tabs on all facets of the project, and informed contractors when materials were delayed. Because these contractors have an excellent working relationship with Zones, they were happy to accommodate the amended timelines.

Wellington’s notoriously wet winter weather meant work progressed slower than planned on the patio and pergola. But Lia and her team ensured the project was delivered as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality and craftsmanship.

A Picturesque Retreat

The new large doors of Frank and Helen’s sun-soaked conservatory open up to a beautiful patio, complete with pergola. A noteworthy touch is the stunning tilework, which transitions seamlessly from the floor of the sunroom to the outdoor area.

The Tile Space provided the large, light-coloured slabs that make the entire indoor/outdoor space feel open and elegant. A stylish white pergola provides shade over the patio while complementing the rest of the property.

Final Thoughts

Impressed with the smooth process that Zones Landscaping provided and Lia’s exemplary communication and project management throughout, Helen and Frank now have a versatile indoor-outdoor space from which to enjoy their tranquil yet commanding view.
