Small Space Garden Design Auckland

Small section. Big outdoor life.
A compact Auckland section doesn't mean compromising on what your outdoor space can be. It means designing smarter - and that's something we're very good at.
Small space garden design in Auckland
Auckland sections are getting smaller. Infill development, terraced housing and apartment living have created a city where many homeowners have compact outdoor spaces - and often don't know what to do with them.
The temptation with a small section is to keep things simple and not bother with proper design. That's usually the wrong call. A small space that hasn't been designed tends to feel cluttered, awkward and underused. A small space with a clear design - defined zones, considered planting, the right surfaces - can feel genuinely generous and be a pleasure to spend time in.
We design compact gardens and courtyards across Auckland Central - from small backyards in Grey Lynn and Ponsonby to narrow terraced sections in Mount Eden, tight courtyard spaces in Parnell and compact new build sections in the CBD fringe. The principles are the same regardless of the specific space: clarity, proportion and using every part of the section intentionally.
How we approach small space design
Define zones clearly: In a large garden, zones develop naturally. In a small garden, they need to be designed deliberately. A seating area, a planting bed, a path - when these are clearly defined and properly proportioned, even a compact space feels organised and intentional rather than cramped.
Choose surfaces carefully: In a small space, the surface materials are more visible and have more impact than in a large garden. We select paving, decking and gravel carefully - the right scale of unit, the right colour, the right texture for your home's style - so the surfaces enhance the space rather than fighting it.
Use vertical space: A small footprint doesn't mean a small garden. Walls, fences and structures are opportunities - climbing plants, vertical gardens, espaliered trees, built-in seating with planting behind it. We design upwards as well as outwards.
Borrow the sky: A compact garden that opens upward feels bigger than one that's enclosed at eye level. We think carefully about canopy height, overhead structure and how the garden reads against the sky - keeping the space open where it benefits from it and adding structure where privacy or enclosure is needed.
Multi-purpose features: In a small space, every element should do more than one thing. A raised planter can also be a seat. A deck can double as an entertaining area and a storage solution. A pergola creates shade, defines a zone and supports climbing plants. We design features that earn their place in the space.
Plant for scale: Oversized plants in a small space are one of the most common mistakes we see. We select plants that are proportionate to the space - smaller species, columnar forms, slow-growing varieties - so the garden stays in scale as it matures and doesn't overwhelm the space within a few seasons.
Small space projects we design and build in Auckland
Compact courtyards: Enclosed courtyard spaces off main living areas - often the most used outdoor space in a terrace or townhouse. We design for privacy, sun, planting and a connection to the interior that makes the courtyard feel like an extension of the house.
Small backyards: A modest backyard can still accommodate a proper outdoor living area, a garden and a lawn for the kids if the design is right. We make sure every part of the section is used rather than leaving awkward leftover spaces.
Narrow side gardens: Side access areas are often completely neglected - a path through dead space. With the right design, a side garden can become a genuinely enjoyable part of the property, whether that's a fernery, a kitchen herb garden or a quiet passage planted with something beautiful.
Rooftop gardens and terraces: Apartment and terrace house owners with rooftop or balcony spaces often have the best outdoor views in the city and the least-developed outdoor spaces. We design rooftop gardens and terraces that are properly waterproofed, weight-compliant and genuinely usable.
Front gardens: A compact front garden is one of the highest-visibility spaces on a property and one of the most neglected. We design front gardens that make a strong first impression, require minimal maintenance and work with the home's architecture.
Why Auckland homeowners choose Zones for small space design
We take small projects seriouslyNot every landscaping company is interested in compact sections. We design and build projects of all sizes and bring the same level of design thought to a 40sqm courtyard as we do to a large suburban garden.
Design makes the differenceIn a small space, good design matters more than in a large one - there's nowhere to hide mistakes and no room to waste. Our designers understand proportion, scale and how to make compact spaces feel bigger than they are.
Everything managedEven a small project involves multiple trades - paving, carpentry, planting, possibly lighting and irrigation. We manage all of it under one fixed quote.
How it works
1. Free consultation: We visit your property and assess the space. Small spaces often have more potential than their owners realise - we'll show you what's possible before you commit to anything.
2. Design: We develop a design that makes the most of every square metre - surfaces, planting, structures and lighting all considered together.
3. Construction: Our team builds the project in the right sequence, working carefully in tight spaces. We leave the site clean and hand over a space that's ready to enjoy.
