Pool and Landscape Design Auckland

Your pool and your outdoor space, designed as one.

A pool dropped into an unfinished backyard is a missed opportunity. When the pool, the deck, the planting, the privacy and the lighting are all designed together from the start, the result is something completely different - a cohesive outdoor space that works beautifully as a whole.

Pool and landscape design in Auckland

Most pool projects in Auckland are commissioned in two separate stages - pool first, then figure out the landscaping afterwards. It's understandable, but it usually leads to a worse outcome. The landscaping feels like it's working around the pool rather than with it. Materials don't quite match. The planting looks like it was added as an afterthought. The lighting was retrofitted and the conduit shows.

When pool and landscape design happen together, none of that happens. The deck flows from the pool edge at the right level. The planting softens the hard edges in exactly the right places. Privacy screening is positioned where it actually works. Lighting is integrated into the structure and the pool itself. The whole outdoor space reads as one considered design.

Our Auckland Central team designs and builds complete pool and landscape projects - from the first design concept through to swimming. One team managing everything, one fixed quote covering it all.

What a combined pool and landscape project includes

Pool design and installation
We work with you to determine the right pool type, size, shape and position for your section and how you want to use it. Whether that's a fibreglass pool for a quick, clean installation, a custom concrete pool for a specific shape or size, or a plunge pool for a compact Auckland section - we manage the full installation including building consent, excavation, pool installation, fencing compliance, heating and filtration.

Poolside decking and paving
The surface around a pool needs to handle wet feet, direct sun and chemical splash while looking great and not becoming slippery. We design and install poolside decking in composite and hardwood, and paving in natural stone, concrete and pavers - selecting materials that suit your pool design, your home's style and Auckland's conditions.

Planting and garden design
Planting around a pool does several things at once - it softens the hard landscaping, provides privacy, adds shade where it's wanted, and creates the lush, finished feel that separates a great pool space from a functional one. We select plants suited to pool environments - species that don't drop excessive leaf litter into the water, handle reflected heat and work with Auckland's climate year-round.

Privacy and screening
Most Auckland pool areas need some degree of privacy from neighbours. We design privacy solutions as part of the overall landscape - timber screens, louvre panels, strategic planting, fencing or a combination - so the pool area feels genuinely secluded without being walled off.

Outdoor living integration
A pool is most enjoyable when it's connected to a well-designed outdoor living space. We design the deck, outdoor dining area, lounge space and any covered areas as part of the overall pool landscape - creating a space you'd want to be in whether or not you're swimming.

Outdoor kitchens and entertaining areas
A pool and outdoor kitchen combination is one of the most popular project types we design in Auckland. Integrated properly, the kitchen and the pool become anchors of an outdoor space that works for everything from a quiet evening to a large gathering.

Lighting
Underwater pool lighting, poolside lighting, garden uplighting and ambient lighting for the entertaining area all need to be designed and wired as part of the build - not added later. We integrate lighting into the landscape design from the start for a result that's clean, functional and genuinely atmospheric after dark.

Pool fencing
New Zealand law requires compliant pool fencing for all residential pools. We design and install pool fencing that meets the Building Act requirements while looking like an intentional part of the overall landscape design - not a legal afterthought.

Why designing pool and landscape together produces better results

Levels work properly
Pool installation involves significant earthworks. When the landscape is designed at the same time, we can plan the final levels for decking, garden beds and lawn areas around the pool excavation - avoiding unnecessary cut and fill and making sure everything sits at the right height relative to the house and pool.

Materials are consistent
When pool coping, decking and path materials are all selected together, they can be coordinated to work with each other. When they're specified separately at different times, you often end up with materials that almost match - which looks worse than a deliberate contrast.

Services are run once
Electrical conduit for pool equipment, underwater lighting, outdoor kitchen power and garden lighting all needs to go in the ground once. When everything is designed together we run all services in a single groundworks phase - cheaper and cleaner than opening up the ground multiple times.

Less disruption
A combined pool and landscape project means one period of construction rather than two. Less time with your backyard out of action, less ongoing project management and a finished result sooner.

Pool and landscape design across Auckland Central

Auckland's sections vary significantly in size, shape, slope and soil - all of which affect how a pool and landscape project needs to be approached. Compact inner-city sections in Ponsonby and Grey Lynn call for a very different design approach to larger sections in Remuera or Saint Heliers. Sloped sections in Mount Eden or Epsom require careful retaining and level design before a pool can be positioned properly.

We've designed and built combined pool and landscape projects across Auckland Central and know how to make the most of what each section offers - whether that's a generous flat section with room for a full entertaining setup or a tight urban property where the design needs to work harder.

Why Auckland homeowners choose Zones for pool and landscape design

One team for everything: Pool installation, earthworks, decking, paving, planting, fencing, lighting - managed by one team under one fixed quote. You're not coordinating a pool company and a separate landscaper and hoping they work together well.

Design-first: Everything starts with a design that covers the pool and the complete outdoor space together. You see the full picture before any work begins.

Consent managed: Pool installation requires building consent. We handle it, along with any retaining wall or earthworks consents required for the landscape component.

Fixed quote: One quote covering the full scope of work. No variations from separate contractors, no surprises when the pool is in and you start getting landscape quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What Swimming Pool Installation services does Zones® offer?

Zones® are the professional home swimming pool builders you can trust. We work with experienced designers and installers and our services cover everything from designer in-ground pools and relaxing spas, to plunge pools, fibreglass pools, saltwater pools, and more. We have installed swimming pools Auckland wide and can deliver your dream project, no matter the size!

What is the best type of swimming pool?

Our team of landscaping experts can design the ideal pool and landscape for you and your lifestyle. Think about how you are going to use the pool and pool area, and what type of lighting or other outdoor entertainment features you may want to include. Soil type can have an impact on what works best for your site, as can the general layout and size of your section. We will work with you to design the right shape and choose the right materials for your specific requirements.

Across Auckland, fibreglass pools are probably the most popular type of swimming pool due to their affordability and low maintenance requirements. As a high-end alternative, pools made of concrete offer you the option of a fully customised design, however, a concrete swimming pool requires on-going maintenance and will possibly need to be resurfaced eventually. Spa pools are a good option for smaller outdoor spaces and offer the added bonus of being usable all year round.

Every pool will need to be cleaned and maintained in some way, and our swimming pool designers can advise on the best low maintenance options and the most suitable pool filtration systems.

How long does it take to install a swimming pool?

The installation time of a swimming pool depends on many factors, including the pool type, engineering work, foundation work, drainage requirements, and the building of necessary retaining walls and fences. Once we have visited your site, we can prepare an initial design concept and timeline, along with a budget range indication.

Obtaining council consent will take some time as well, and this should be planned into the project timeframe. Our Zones Auckland pool builders are highly experienced in this area and can assist you with the compliance process. Generally speaking, every pool requires a building consent from Auckland Council. The only exceptions are spa pools or swim spas (under 5 square metres) with a lockable cover, and above-ground pools that are self-fencing and higher than 1.2 metres above ground. Explore our structured 5-step process to create your stress-free outdoor swimming pool.
