Nicknamed “the coolest little Capital in the world”, Wellington is just that with its compact city, waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour, and countless homes adorning the surrounding hills.
The cosmopolitan city and its energetic personality is complemented by equally energetic homeowners keen to add value to their properties.
For Zones landscaping specialist Steve Strawbridge, who runs the Wellington franchise with wife Rochelle from their base on the Kapiti Coast, it means designing and creating the likes of stunning outdoor rooms.
In fact, Steve and his dedicated team of experts have completed numerous projects, from outdoor rooms to planting up banks, creating “oases” for new builds and designing or redesigning areas to spruce up existing homes. The ability to provide a complete design and build service in all aspects of outdoor landscaping has resulted in some huge transformations. For instance, Zones Landscaping has allowed many Wellingtonians, who, being Kiwis love the outdoors, enjoy the outdoors year-round.
Issues with the elements, especially wind, can spoil it but the installation of some form of additional shelter in the form of drop-down shades, sides and/or roofing can change all that. No space is too big or too small for Steve and his team - designed well, some of the smaller spaces are the more cosy havens but larger spaces come up well and have a purpose too. The secret to creating that great, functional outdoor room though lies within the planning and design process, something Zones prides itself on.
It’s the same when it comes to landscape design and planting. Some homeowners landscape to tidy up, some want low maintenance or intend to sell while others want to become self-sufficient and plant fruit and vegetable trees and or create green areas for kids to play in. Often homeowners attempt to landscape themselves and buy their own plants, but they don’t necessarily buy the right varieties for the conditions. To avoid wasted time, money and disappointment, Zones can come up with a planting plan – and sound advice.
Wellington is so diverse in terms of soil types, sun and wind that there’s no plant that’s right for every condition. Covering the greater Wellington region, Steve has a good understanding of all soil types – Churton Park is clay/rock, Ngaio rock, and Kapiti sandy, for example. He takes into consideration the main three elements – wind, sun and soil – of every individual property and makes sure plants work for those conditions. The well-landscaped gardens Zones can create can make a huge difference to properties and the amount of time homeowners need to spend in them.
There’s nothing worse than time-poor people heading outdoors only to be confronted with a lot of work to do in their garden. Zones can take away those obstacles and instead ensure homeowners enjoy their surroundings rather than be overwhelmed by them. With three children themselves– 12-year-old twins Liam and Sophia and four-year-old Keeva, Steve and Rochelle know all about busy lives.
Running their own business allows them to effectively juggle their work and family life, and their combined skills provide their clients with sound product and industry knowledge. A qualified builder, Steve worked for a large building firm as foreman and project manager before switching to the corporate world and undertaking sales and executive management roles. Rochelle is a trained preschool teacher but has mastered the skills of HR, administration, event management and office management through her 15-plus years in roles ranging from receptionist to executive assistant.
Now, the couple’s expertise is put to good use in Zones Landscaping, where they are both passionate about helping people bring their visions to life. Outside of work the Strawbridge’s are just as community-minded. With son Liam playing rugby for the Kapiti Junior Rugby Club and being rugby fanatics, Steve is currently treasurer and a former club captain.
